INTRODUCTION

India is the land of major religions. It is the birthplace of many major religions. From temples to mosques, churches to shrines, India has pilgrimage destinations belonging to multiple religions. India is one of the most preferred locations for religious tourism for both domestic and international travelers. Tourism enables international travelers to understand and experience India’s cultural diversity. Pilgrimage, educational and cultural exploration, leisure, and recreation are some of the key aspects of religious tourism. The Indian government has taken major initiatives to promote religious tourism. The government is actively using digital platforms and promoting events to showcase India’s rich religious and spiritual offerings

RELIGIOUS TOURISM

Religious Tourism is a type of tourism strongly motivated by religious reasons. It is also known as sacred tourism, faith tourism, and includes a variety of travel experiences revolving around religious and spiritual purposes. Religious Tourism is mainly of two types: Pilgrimage, meaning travel for religious purposes, and the other is for exploration of religious monuments and artifacts. India is called the ‘Land of Faith’ as it is the home of major religions which including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc. Each religion has its own tradition and religious formalities, as holy places, worshipping methods, etc. India offers religious sites for all religions. There are some states in India that have been fully developed as sites for religious tourism, while some states have the potential for development and can be developed by the combined efforts of people as well as the government.

OBJECTIVES OF RELIGIOUS TOURISM

  1. Spiritual fulfillment: 
    Religious Tourism helps tourists to connect with their faith, seek blessings and find spiritual solace. Religious sites offer a serene environment favorable for meditation, introspection and personal reflection.
  2. Cultural and Heritage Preservation:
    Religious Tourism can encourage preservation and maintenance of historical and cultural landmarks associated with different religions. It fosters interaction between people of diverse backgrounds, promoting cultural understanding.
  3. Economic Development:
    Religious Tourism offers a vast scope for employment in various sectors, contributing to local economy. Religious Tourism offers direct and indirect scope of employment to local people.
  4. Promotes Tolerance and Brotherhood: 
    Religious Tourism can facilitate dialogue and interaction between people of different faiths, fostering tolerance and respect. It can break stereotypes and promote a more inclusive environment.

GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE RELIGIOUS TOURISM

  1. PRASAD Scheme:
    This scheme was launched by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. It stands for Pilgrimage Rejuvenation & Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive. Its main objective is to develop tourism infrastructure at pilgrimage and heritage and to ensure a more enriching experience.
  2. Swadesh Darshan Scheme:
    This scheme aims at integrated development along with tourist circuits based on themes.
  3. Dekho Apna Desh Initiative:
    This initiative was launched in 2020 for promotion of domestic tourism in country. It aims to engage with the citizens to identify most preferred tourist locations.
  4. Adopt A Heritage Scheme: 
    This scheme was launched in 2017 and was revamped in 2025. This scheme aims at modification of available amenities for the visitors by some people, who adopt the site for proper maintenance after approval from Archeological Survey of India.

CHALLENGES WITH RELIGIOUS TOURISM

  1. Poor Management:
    There are various schemes for the promotion of religious tourism. But, due to the lack of proper implementation of the schemes, the process slows down. Either there are very less amenities or there is lack of proper management for better functioning.
  2. Waste Management:
    While there are various steps being taken by government for promotion of Religious Tourism, but some factors like lack of waste management slows down the efforts.
  3. Lack of Infrastructure:
     There are many religious places that are not so well developed and lack basic amenities, which may include lack of budget friendly hotels, inadequate connectivity, lack of proper sanitation, etc.
  4. Lack of Awareness and effective Marketing:
    Most of the people remain unaware about presence of many religious sites in our country. There are many places which need effective marketing strategy to be known to the world.

WAYS TO DEVELOP RELIGIOUS TOURISM

  1. Infrastructural Development:  
    Arrangement of budget friendly accommodation, sanitation facilities and adequate connectivity with the means of transport world can play an important role in development of religious tourism.
  2. Awareness and Marketing: 
    There are several schemes to promote the growth of religious tourism, but these schemes are not implemented properly. Here, effective marketing comes into play. With proper marketing, religious sites can be developed, hence promoting tourism.

CONCLUSION

India is the home to many major religions of the world. There are tourist places associated to almost all the religions which makes this country a major site for religious tourism. There are various objectives of religious tourism, which include spiritual fulfillment, cultural and heritage preservation, etc. There are various initiatives launched by government to promote religious tourism such as PRASAD Scheme, Swadesh Darshan Scheme, Dekho Apna Desh Scheme and Adopt a Heritage Scheme. Religious tourism is playing an important role in economic growth and a time will come when India will be in the Bucket list of every traveler around the globe.
